Frequently asked questions

Last reviewed: October 2026

Will my solar battery work during a power cut?

Most standard solar battery systems do not provide power during a grid power cut, because the inverter shuts down for safety when the grid goes down. To keep power during outages you need a battery with a backup or EPS (Emergency Power Supply) feature, which is wired to a dedicated circuit.

What is the difference between backup and non-backup battery systems?

A non-backup battery stores solar or cheap grid electricity for use later but cannot power your home during a grid outage. A backup battery includes an EPS relay that isolates your home from the grid and powers essential circuits from the battery during a power cut.

Can I add backup capability to an existing solar battery?

It depends on your inverter and battery model. Some systems can be retrofitted with an EPS relay, while others would need a new inverter. Your survey checks whether your existing system can be upgraded or whether a replacement inverter is needed.

How long will a backup battery power my home during a power cut?

A typical 10kWh backup battery can power essential circuits (fridge, lighting, broadband, some sockets) for several hours to a day, depending on load. Whole-home backup during an outage is possible with a larger battery but drains it faster. Your survey sizes the backup to your needs.

Do I need backup power if I live in a town or city in Scotland?

Power cuts in urban Scottish areas are relatively infrequent but can happen during storms. If you work from home, rely on medical equipment or have an electric heating system, backup power may be worthwhile. Your survey discusses whether backup is a sensible addition for your circumstances.

Does adding backup power increase the cost of a solar battery system?

Yes, adding EPS backup typically adds an extra cost for the relay and additional wiring. Your written quote shows the backup option separately so you can decide whether the extra cost is justified for your home.

Questions people ask about this service

Do you install solar panels and batteries in Scotland?

Yes, we arrange installations for homes and businesses in Scotland through MCS-certified partners. Every quote starts with a survey of the roof, energy use and budget, so the system is designed around your property — not a one-size-fits-all package.

How much do solar panels cost in Scotland?

Every system is designed for your home after a no-obligation survey. Your written quotation shows the full price, the equipment and the warranties before you commit. Finance are available, subject to status. We check which funding and finance options you qualify for.

Can I add a battery to solar panels I already have?

Usually yes, sometimes with an inverter upgrade if your current inverter is not battery-compatible. We check the existing system at the survey and explain the options first, so you know exactly what is involved, what it costs, and whether it makes sense before you decide.

Do solar panels work in Scottish weather?

Yes. Solar panels generate electricity on overcast days as well as sunny ones. A typical 5kW system in Scotland generates approximately 4,000 to 4,500 kWh per year. Generation is highest from April to September but continues year-round.

Is finance available?

Finance options are available, subject to status. We explain what is on offer with your written quote, including any applicable funding, so you can compare paying upfront against spreading the cost over monthly payments and choose the option that suits your budget.
