How Heat Pumps Work

Air source heat pumps extract warmth from outdoor air and amplify it to heat your home. Modern units achieve a COP of 3–4, meaning for every 1kW of electricity used, you get 3–4kW of heat.

Frequently asked questions

Last reviewed: October 2026

What is an air source heat pump?

An air source heat pump is an outdoor unit that draws heat from the surrounding air and transfers it into your home. It supplies your radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water, replacing a gas, oil or electric boiler. It runs on electricity and works much like a fridge in reverse, moving heat rather than burning fuel.

Do heat pumps work in Scotland's cold weather?

Yes, modern air source heat pumps are designed to keep running in cold, damp conditions and are widely used in countries with harsher winters than Scotland. The key is correct sizing, good insulation and suitable radiators. Your free survey calculates the heat your home needs so the system is designed for Scottish winters from the start.

How does the free heat pump survey work?

Your free, no-obligation heat pump survey starts with a room-by-room look at your home, its insulation and your current heating system. We check radiator sizes, hot water needs and a suitable spot for the outdoor unit. You then receive a heat loss assessment, a recommended system and a written quote to consider in your own time.

What happens on heat pump installation day?

On installation day, we install through MCS-certified partners who remove your old boiler, place the outdoor unit and fit a hot water cylinder if needed. They connect the pipework, upgrade any radiators agreed at survey, then commission and test the system. Larger jobs can take a few days, and the team explains every control before leaving.

Can I spread the cost of a heat pump?

Yes. Loans available, subject to status, so you can spread the cost of a heat pump rather than paying it all upfront. Your adviser talks you through the funding and finance options you may qualify for during your free survey. Any finance is arranged through authorised lenders, and there is no obligation to go ahead.
