Frequently asked questions

Last reviewed: October 2026

Can I install solar panels on a flat roof in Scotland?

Yes. Solar panels on flat roofs are mounted on angled frames tilted at around 20 to 30 degrees to capture maximum daylight. The frames are ballasted rather than penetrating the roof, so no drilling is needed. Your survey checks the roof structure and orientation.

Can I put solar panels on my garage roof?

Yes. Garage roofs are commonly used for solar panels, either as a standalone system or combined with house roof panels. The garage roof needs to be structurally sound and have enough surface area. An inverter and battery can be installed inside the garage for easy access.

Are ground-mount solar panels allowed in Scotland?

Ground-mount solar arrays up to 9 square metres are generally permitted development in Scotland. Larger arrays may need planning permission. Your survey checks ground conditions, shading, orientation and any planning considerations for your property.

Do flat roof solar panels need planning permission in Scotland?

Most flat roof solar installations are permitted development, provided the panels do not protrude more than 200mm above the roof surface and are not visible from the road in conservation areas. Your survey confirms whether any consent is needed for your property.

Which is better: roof mount or ground mount solar?

Roof mounting is usually preferred because it uses unused space and costs less. Ground mounting is an option when roof space is limited, shaded or structurally unsuitable. Ground mounts allow optimal tilt and easy cleaning but take up garden or land space.

Can I combine solar on my garage with panels on my house roof?

Yes. Many installations combine panels on different roof surfaces, including house and garage roofs, connected to a single inverter and battery system. Your survey assesses each surface for orientation, shading and structural suitability.

Questions people ask about this service

Do you install solar panels and batteries in Scotland?

Yes, we arrange installations for homes and businesses in Scotland through MCS-certified partners. Every quote starts with a survey of the roof, energy use and budget, so the system is designed around your property — not a one-size-fits-all package.

How much do solar panels cost in Scotland?

Every system is designed for your home after a no-obligation survey. Your written quotation shows the full price, the equipment and the warranties before you commit. Finance are available, subject to status. We check which funding and finance options you qualify for.

Can I add a battery to solar panels I already have?

Usually yes, sometimes with an inverter upgrade if your current inverter is not battery-compatible. We check the existing system at the survey and explain the options first, so you know exactly what is involved, what it costs, and whether it makes sense before you decide.

Do solar panels work in Scottish weather?

Yes. Solar panels generate electricity on overcast days as well as sunny ones. A typical 5kW system in Scotland generates approximately 4,000 to 4,500 kWh per year. Generation is highest from April to September but continues year-round.

Is finance available?

Finance options are available, subject to status. We explain what is on offer with your written quote, including any applicable funding, so you can compare paying upfront against spreading the cost over monthly payments and choose the option that suits your budget.
